What Will You Accomplish This Year?

Good afternoon! My name is Nate King. I am an Oral English teacher at Markham Overseas College. I teach sophomores here at the Xiasha campus. I was honored when Dean Qui called me on Friday to address the students during these opening ceremonies. So, I have one question to pose for all of the students. What will you accomplish this year?

After this year, many of my students are looking to continue their collegiate studies abroad at American Universities. These students have had an opportunity to study English for many years. I plan on doing my best to assist my students in their pursuits. I plan on teaching my students various ways to study for their IELTS test, so they can do their absolute best on this exam. I plan on operating my classroom as an American University room, so my students become familiar with the requires of studying at an American college. I plan on going over popular American slang words and idioms, so my students can properly communicate their thoughts toward American classmates. What does “Chill out dude!” or “That was sic!” exactly mean. You will learn. I plan on having fun this year, and I expect my students to do the same.  I plan on giving my students the edge they need to accomplish their goals.

But students, what will you do? Will you come to class everyday prepared to learn the most you can? Will you bring your class materials with you? It really is okay to wear a backpack. I’ll tell you a little secret. Many American students wear backpacks everyday, and it is really cool! Will you have your cell phones turned off and put away? Will you be to class on time every time? Will you strive to only speak English in your English classes? You should. Will you have your homework or should I say homefun finished on time? What is the answer I’m looking for? I can’t hear you! The answer is yes! Yes, you will succeed! We will succeed together.

All of you have been given many different and great talents. Some of you are good at sports. Others of you are gifted writers. Some of you have great social skills. These are the skills you use to talk with your friends or to start a conversation with a girl. Some of you are great at learning languages. Others of you are great singers. All of you possess many different talents. They have all been collected here at Hangzhou Normal University. You have the opportunity to share your learning experience with many great talents. You have the opportunity to meet many great friends and to encourage them in their studies. You will have many great friends and teachers doing the same for you. How will you use your talents this year?

Today, when I look out into the crowd, I see many young and eager minds with much potential. I see many young people who can accomplish much at the same American Universities numerous great minds have attended. I see future doctors, lawyers, teachers, and business men and women. I see the future of China. Look inside of yourself. What do you see? Where will your future take you? Your future starts today. Your opportunity to learn English is now. Your opportunity to obtain an American degree starts here. What will you accomplish this year? Thank you!
